Getting Started
The new New York app is here. We built this app for you — our valued readers and subscribers — to get the most out of your reading experience. Learn how to use this free app to enjoy New York Magazine on your iPhone or Android device.
- iOS Devices: Available for free from the App Store. Compatible with devices running iOS 16 or later.
- Android Devices: Available for free from the Google Play Store. Compatible with devices running Android OS 13 or later.
The app includes some free features. For unlimited access, become a subscriber by purchasing a monthly or annual plan. For more information about subscriptions, visit our Subscription FAQs.
Sign In to the App
To access everything the app has to offer, create a new account or log in to your existing New York Magazine account. For more information, visit our account FAQ.
Once you have a New York account, you can sign in to it via the app:
- Visit the App Store or Google Play Store and download the New York Magazine app.
- Open the New York Magazine app and enter your log-in information, either using your email address or one of the options to log in with Google, Facebook, or Apple. You should use the same method of accessing your account in the app as you do on nymag.com and its other sites.
- Don’t remember your preferred way to log in? We can provide some guidance based on your past login preferences. In some cases, you may be asked to verify your email address in order to use a social log-in provider (i.e., Google, Facebook, or Apple) to sign in.
- Once you sign in, the app will be connected to your account and an active paid subscription if you have one.
- Don’t have an active paid subscription? We will provide instructions for how to purchase a subscription on our website.
App Features
- It’s a Pleasure: Our app is the most enjoyable way to read our stories on your phone with fewer log-ins.
- Switch Between Sites With Ease: Conveniently toggle between the quick takes, deep dives, and long reads across Vulture, the Cut, Intelligencer, Curbed, Grub Street, and the Strategist. Seamlessly switch between your favorite sites or set the home page as your go-to.
- Introducing “Your New York”: Find your saved articles and reading history in the new “Your New York” tab. Get shortcuts to TV recaps, games, horoscopes, and shopping deals; personalized recommendations; and more must-read stories.
- Listen: Select stories in the app are now available as audio articles.
- Be the First to Know What Everyone’s Talking About: With notifications and a new “Collections” section, both exclusive to the app, you’ll get first access to the most-talked-about stories across New York.
- Join the Conversation: Share your thoughts or read past discussions in the comments section, which is now available on every article.
- Play Daily Games: Find and play your favorite games, including Vulture’s Cinematrix and the New York Crossword, on its own tab within the app.
Notifications
New York provides notifications of the most-talked-about stories even when the app is closed on your iPhone or Android.
To enable notifications when you first download the app, confirm you’d like to “Allow” notifications from New York on the pop-up screen that appears.
If you would like to turn notifications on at a later time, visit your account page on the app. There, you can see all of your preferences, including notifications. To turn on notifications on your account page, toggle “New York Magazine Updates” to green. You will see a pop-up in your app to confirm that you would like to “Allow” notifications from New York. This preference can be turned off or on at any time.
