About Gift Links
What are gift links?
Gift links let New York subscribers share articles with anyone, even people who don’t subscribe. Each subscriber can send up to ten gift links a month (the count resets on the first), and each gifted article is free to read for 14 days. The recipient doesn’t need a New York Magazine subscription to read the story.
Sending Gift Links
How do I send a gift link?
Log in to your New York subscriber account on our website or in the New York app and open the story you want to share.
On the web, click the gift icon near a headline, then click “Copy gift link.” You’ll see how many gift links you have left this month. Share the link anywhere: text, email, social media, and more.
Opening the gift pop-up doesn’t use a gift link. One is only used when you click “Copy gift link.”
In the app, tap the gift icon at the top of an article, then choose “Generate gift link.” You’ll see how many gift links you have left this month. Share the link anywhere: text, email, social media, and more.
Why don’t I see a gift icon on a story?
A gift icon only appears on stories that are normally behind our paywall. We don’t show it on stories that are always free to read, so you never waste a gift link. If you don’t see the icon, you can share the regular story link, and it will work for anyone.
The icon also won’t appear on stories from the Strategist because most articles are already free to read.
If you’re using the New York app and don’t see gifting on articles, make sure your app is updated to the latest version and that you’re logged in.
Limits & Renewals
Why can’t I share more gift links?
Each New York subscriber can send up to ten gift links a month. You’ve used all your gift links for this month, and your allotment will refresh on the first of next month. When you click the gift icon, you’ll see the date your gift links refresh. Unused gift links don’t roll over.
You can still recopy any gift link you’ve made that hasn’t expired.
Did resharing a link use another one of my gift links?
No. If you’ve already made a gift link for a story and it hasn’t expired, clicking the gift icon on that story will show a “Recopy link” button. Recopying doesn’t use another gift link — it gives you the same link, which still expires 14 days after you first created it.
How do I know how many gift links I have left?
Click the gift icon on any eligible story. You’ll see how many gift links you have left this month. Checking doesn’t use a gift link.
Why don’t I see the option to share gift links in the app?
Gift links are available in the New York app on iOS and Android. If you don’t see the gift icon, try these steps:
- Make sure you’re logged in to your New York subscriber account in the app.
- Update the app to the latest version in the App Store or Google Play.
The gift icon will only appear on stories behind our paywall. The gift icon doesn’t appear on free stories or on the Strategist.
Do I need to log in to send a gift link?
Yes. You’ll need to be logged in to your New York subscriber account on our website or in the app to create a gift link.
I canceled my subscription. Do my gift links still work?
Gift links you created while you were a subscriber will keep working until they expire, 14 days after you created them. You won’t be able to create new gift links unless you resubscribe.
Receiving Gift Links
Why can’t I send a gift link?
Gifting articles is one of the benefits of a New York subscription. To send gift links, subscribe and log in to your account. Subscribers can send up to ten gift links a month.
Do I need an account to read a gifted article?
No. Anyone with a gift link can read that article for free for 14 days without a New York Magazine subscription. You may see a message letting you know a New York subscriber gifted you the article; you can close it and keep reading.
Why does my gift link no longer work?
Gift links expire 14 days after they’re created, then the story returns to our usual paywall. Ask the person who sent it to share a new one; if they have gift links left this month, they can create a new link for the same story.
Can I share a gift link someone sent me?
Yes. A gift link works for anyone who opens it while it’s active, no matter who shares it.
I got a gift link, but it’s not opening in the mobile app.
Gift links open in your phone’s web browser, not the New York app. If the gift link opens in the app, you will not be able to read it. Copy the link and paste it into your preferred browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.) to read the article for free.
